An animal activist teenager continues her quest to save two dimensions in this sequel to The Wrath of Dog…

Baylee jumped out of bed, momentarily forgetting about her father slumbering in the chair next to her. Her heart gave a tug at his presence, but this was no time for sentimentality.

She couldn’t afford to be sidetracked from her vision—the vision that told her they needed to get to New York City, and fast.

Because she knew where the Akita they’d seen on screen yesterday, her father’s second in command, was chained…

The Entire Chained Gods Series (to date, with more to come!) consists of two short stories in addition to the full length novels. The King’s Tether (just $.99 in kindle and $5.97 in paperback) is a prequel story, and can be read either before or after The Wrath of Dog to flesh out the personality of the king. The Knight’s Chain (just $.99 in kindle and $5.97 in paperback) can be read either before or after The Curse of Cur to give further insight into Curjan’s background and personality.

Special thanks to our friends at Big East Akita Rescue for allowing us to use one of their rescue pups, Sprinkles, as our cover model for The Knight’s Chain and The Curse of Cur!

karadonations

Speaking of Big East Akita Rescue, the author discovered today that the group has graciously committed to saving a six month old girl if possible, named Kara, who suffered from intussusception, a surgical emergency. Tamira has already given a small donation to help her, but has pledged to give half of any proceeds from sales of The Curse of Cur through this special for the next five days to help pay for Kara’s surgery. If you choose to buy the book, you’ll be helping her too! If you’d like to give directly for Kara’s care, click this link. We hope for only good things for this precious girl from here on out.

How Sprinkles the Rescue Akita Became a Book Cover Model

sprinkleslo

Sprinkles the Akita (yes, he’s a male!) is a gorgeous representation of the breed, by any Akita lover’s standards. In fact, the moment author Tamira Thayne saw his picture on Akita rescuer JoAnn Dimon’s facebook page, she knew he’d be the perfect image of the warrior for her book protagonist to fight alongside—and maybe even fall in love with.

You see, Tamira’s characters in The Chained Gods Series shapeshift into different animals, and the king’s warriors manifest as dogs in their shifted forms: “One by one they proudly stood as canines, quivering in an effort to contain their excitement: two more shepherds, an Akita, three retrievers, and two St. Bernards. They were a majestic group, the elite of the Perrin army.”—from The King’s Tether, a Chained Gods prequel story.

Rosie Bear and the cat who loved her, Exhia

Akitas have long been the author’s favorite dog breed—since her years of rescuing chained dogs, in fact. Her first interaction with an Akita, a long-haired girl they named Rosie Bear, left her with a permanent affection for the loyal companions.

She knew she wanted to feature the breed in her Chained Gods Series.

She immediately wrote JoAnn and asked if she could use Sprinkles image on at least two of her covers (The Knight’s Chain and The Curse of Cur.)

In return, she shares a photo of Sprinkles and a paragraph about Big East Akita Rescue in the book’s interior pages, hoping to garner more support (and donations!) for the group:

“Sprinkles is the inspiration for Curjan’s dog form. Photo courtesy of JoAnn Dimon, Big East Akita Rescue. B.E.A.R. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, hands-on, Akita rescue group covering the NY, NJ, and PA metropolitan regions and the Northeast. The group rescues unwanted, abused, and neglected Akitas in need. This gorgeous boy was rescued from the Portage Ohio Animal Shelter. Learn more or donate at bigeastakitarescue.org.”

Sprinkles has been adopted by JoAnn, but there are many other beautiful pups at Big East Akita Rescue still waiting for a home of their own! For those interested in making an Akita part of your family, visit their adoption page here: https://bigeastakitarescue.org/available/

A Chained Akita Shapeshifts in Tamira Thayne’s “The Curse of Cur”

The Chained Gods Series
Continues with “The Curse of Cur”

by Tamira Thayne

An animal activist teenager continues her quest to save two dimensions in this sequel to The Wrath of Dog

And her mother was not gonna be happy about it.

Baylee had been instrumental in freeing her father, the king of Perrin, mere days ago from his own 18-year captivity as a chained German shepherd. King Randulf was heartbroken over the conditions his warriors still endured, and knowing they were being tortured and starved was almost more than he could bear.

But it was time for Baylee, her father, and Perrin’s remaining top generals to buck up. It was her mission, their collective mission, to find the chained warriors, unearth the remaining four keys, and rescue both Perrin and Earth from the grip of Phoebus, The Scion, and their legion of minions.

Easy peasy.

Baylee leaned heavily against the bathroom wall, toothbrush hanging from her mouth. Oh, who was she kidding.

The future looked daunting, indeed.

In Tamira’s First Book in the series, The Wrath of Dog, an animal activist teenager finds out there’s more to the chained dog next door than meets the eye. Start your adventure when you meet Baylee there, and then continue through two short stories, The King’s Tether, and The Knight’s Chain, finishing up (for now) with the second book, The Curse of Cur! About the Author:

tamijewelonyxloTamira Thayne pioneered the anti-tethering movement in America, forming and leading the nonprofit Dogs Deserve Better for 13 years.

During her time on the front lines of animal activism and rescue she took on plenty of bad guys (often failing miserably); her swan song culminated in the purchase and transformation of Michael Vick’s dogfighting compound to a chained-dog rescue and rehabilitation center. She’s spent 878 hours chained to a doghouse on behalf of the voiceless in front of state capitol buildings nationwide, and worked with her daughter to take on a school system’s cat dissection program, garnering over 100,000 signatures against the practice.

She’s the author of the Chained Gods series, the Animal Protectors Series, Foster Doggie Insanity and Capitol in Chains. She’s the editor of More Rescue Smiles, and the co-editor of Unchain My Heart and Rescue Smiles.

In 2016 she founded Who Chains You, publishing books by and for animal activists and rescuers.

The Trial of the Outlaw Collie Sam • A Unique Look at the Plight of Man’s Best Friend

Now Available, from Who Chains You Books:

The Trial of the Outlaw Collie Sam

by Dale Seddon

“I was born,” he began, “by a dumpster at noon,
In a broken down doghouse with only one room,
With only one window we used as a door,
With rats in the rafters and mud on the floor.”

Raised by a single parent, the outlaw collie Sam and his seven siblings run wild and free, feasting on castaway food in garbage cans and chasing after humans to scare them, all for the fun of it. Then one day disaster strikes. Sam and his brothers and sisters mistakenly frighten the wrong human. The Catchers arrive at the dilapidated doghouse in the middle of the night, guns in hand. Sam is wounded. But he manages to escape.

The next day, Sam is found by a Keeper, a kind human who takes the dog home and sets about training him.

“He healed my wound and he purchased a tag.
I trained to the collar and re-learned to wag.
It wasn’t all easy. Oh no, to be sure.
I yearned for the smell of the pack and the poor.
I longed for my snout in the wind and the fun,
For the thrill of the free in the rush of the run.
But slowly I learned that I had to obey.
The Keeper was mine if I wanted to stay.”

The Trial of the Outlaw Collie Sam is so far outside the box that it’s difficult to label as anything but absolutely unique. Part poem, part fantasy, part courtroom drama, and part—a very large part—the true story of the real outlaw collie Sam, a Heinz-57 variety mongrel dog whose life and adventures were the inspiration for the story.

The Trial of the Outlaw Collie Sam and its companion story about the real Sam are both captivating tales. The story of the trial itself is beautifully told. It bounces along in an almost musical fashion—especially when the narrative poem describing it is read aloud. It provides an intimate glimpse into how “guilt” or “innocence” is established for our animal friends.

And the story about the real outlaw collie Sam? Well, that is worth reading too, if for no other reason than to avoid making the same mistakes that the author did when Sam chose him to be his Keeper.

This title is perfect for middle school through adult, and can be used as a humane education tool for classroom use for the discussion of social issues as well.

The Eclipse Dancer

By Laura Koerber

Andy thought of flying. She imagined the air under her arms, her hair lifting and floating. She felt her heartbeat separate from the faraway beat and form its own rhythm: light, quick, a dancing thrum. When she opened her eyes, her yard was dusky and her mood had lightened.

She let her gaze drift across the darkening landscape. Andy’s heart filled with exultation. She raised her arms, fanned out her fingers, and arched her feet until she was on her toes.

She was assaulted by memories. Her mother was dying, and Danny had been dead for years. Her daughter was in Minneapolis, and Alana was up in the North Woods someplace. All of her childhood friends—the fairies, Hairy, Mr. Tolliver, and Kenshi—were gone.

Is it true that childhood is never overcome? “I have changed,” she whispered.

The light exploded into a ring of fire in a black sky: total eclipse.

She gently rose up into the warm, dark air and began to dance.

“Dandelion’s Dream” is a Touching Look at the Life of a Chained Dog

Dandelion’s Dream

Written by Heather Leughmyer
Illustrated by April Pedersen

Sweet little Dandelion lived all alone; her bed was a barrel, her companion, a bone. The soft green grass had been slowly replaced; leaving dirt behind in the path that she paced.

In the daytime she’d wait while she watched passing cars. In the darkness she’d wish on all of the stars. In the winter she’d shiver; no escape from the cold. With no shield from the sun, summers got old.

She yearned for a family and a nice, cozy bed; a scratch on the belly, a pat on the head. She dreamed of the day when SHE’D be the one, alongside a jogger for a brisk morning run.

There was only one thing that brought Dandelion joy: a redheaded, freckle-faced, 8-year-old boy…

Could a little boy be Dandelion’s hero? Find out in this lyrical rhyming story from author Heather Leughmyer, part of her Kindness to Animals Series. Perfect for ages 5 and up, and excellent for both humane education and library and family story time.

How HumaneEducator.com Uses WCY Children’s Books in Its Educational Programs

Debbie and book

Humane Educator Debbie Gladwin with “Slow Moe”, by April Pedersen

Who Chains You Books loves to feature humane educators using our books in their programs. We asked Debbie Gladwin, founder of HumaneEducator.com, about her work for the animals and children, and how she finds our books useful. Here’s what she told us:

As a Certified Humane Education Specialist, I am always on the hunt for books with a humane education theme. At HumaneEducator.com, we often use animal themed literature. There is a unique bond between young people and animals that helps us to communicate empathy, compassion and respect for other living beings.

In our Bella’s Backyard Buddies program, we use many of the books published by Who Chains You Publishing. Books like Happy Dog: From Chained to Cherished, Sloe Moe: A Snail Tale and Doodle Bugs Second Chance are a part or our literature curriculum. They are perfect for read-alouds and compassion circle discussions. We have created art projects, writing activities, puzzles and games…all based on these animal-themed books.

We’ve created a body of curriculum based in part on the books and use them in a variety of environments like classrooms, after school programs, and service learning projects. These books make it easy for us to create activities that meet state academic standards and can easily be blended into an existing curriculum.

Rescue Dog Photo

Debbie’s rescue pups waiting for their bedtime story!

They are also great for family time reading at home. I’ve been known to read these books to my own rescue dogs!

What I love about Who Chains You Books as part of our program is watching the faces of the audience of young people light up as they listen to the stories of compassion and caring. They want to help.

allbooks-lo

We love that the heroes and heroines of these inspirational books are compassionate and respectful activists who are role models for the young people we teach. We also love that the stories are about all kinds of animals…dogs, cats, horses…but goats, pigs, rats, mice, snails and birds too!

At HumaneEducator.com, we strive to provide young people with opportunities to develop critical thinking skills that will help them to make informed lifestyle choices. We help them to understand critical issues like animal abuse in a way that will help them to see that they can be a part of the solution instead of the problem.

Located in central Oklahoma, our mission is to empower students to understand the effect that their actions have on other people, animals and the environment. We give them the tools and skills they’ll need to make responsible lifestyle choices. In addition, we provide parent/caregiver training that empowers them to help the children in their lives to live with kindness, empathy and compassion. We partner with schools and individual educators to enable them to incorporate humane education principles into their existing academic curriculum and school culture.

Currently, we have three projects—Bella’s Backyard Buddies is our humane education literacy program. HumaneEducator.com is our character education program and BullyCrisis.com is our program designed to empower kids to be upstanders against bullying.

When I am not creating curriculum, searching for new ideas or attending events, I love spending time with my husband and three rescue fur babies. Charlie and Bella are my two senior dogs and Catboy is my senior cat who were all rescued while we were living in Southern California. My personal life goal is to partner with people, especially children, to help them to discover their own skills and talents and how they can use them to live socially responsible lives.

If you are interested in further information about our humane education programs, please contact us at any one of our websites: HumanEducator.com, BellasBackyardBuddies.com or BullyCrisis.com.

—Debbie Gladwin, founder, humaneeducator.com

humaneed-lo

P.S. We LOVE working with humane educators! We’ve created some amazing books—featuring animals and issues that haven’t been addressed elsewhere—but we partner with those doing the work in the field to bring the animals’ voices to the children. That’s why we always offer wholesale discounts for humane educators and nonprofits. Check out our program for humane educators here, http://whochainsyou.com/humane-ed.html, and drop us a line if you have other ideas for projects we can do together at info@whochainsyou.com.
